President-elect Trump has named Penny Schwinn as his pick for deputy secretary of education. Here are the key points:

  • Schwinn brings extensive K-12 experience, including roles as Tennessee's schools chief (2019-2023), and previous positions at Delaware and Texas education departments
  • She started as a Teach For America teacher and later founded a charter school, demonstrating strong support for school choice
  • Key achievements include:
    • Establishing Tennessee's first federally registered teacher apprenticeship program
    • Focusing on evidence-based literacy teaching
    • Developing stronger teacher pipelines

Schwinn will work alongside Linda McMahon, Trump's choice for Education Secretary. The administration's K-12 agenda focuses on dismantling the Department of Education and expanding private school choice.

Additionally, Eric Bledsoe has been named as special assistant to the president for domestic policy, focusing on education. He previously served as senior director of civics at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
